How to Style Mid-Top and Low-Top Sneakers

Mid-top or low-top: it is a hem question

Sneaker styling starts at the ankle. A low-top ends below the ankle bone, so the trouser hem falls over it and the leg reads long and uninterrupted. Mid-top sneakers cut across the ankle, so the hem has to break above them — which shortens the leg visually but makes the shoe part of the outfit rather than a footnote.

Neither is more correct. Decide what you want the trouser to do first, then pick the height.

Low-tops: the invisible option

Wear low-tops when the trousers are the subject — wide, pleated, or long enough to stack.

Mid-tops: the shape option

Wear mid-tops when you want the ankle to show and the shoe to hold its own — cropped or straight trousers, hem just brushing the collar.

Three rules that always hold

  • Match the sole weight to the trouser weight. A chunky sole under a thin trouser looks borrowed; keep both substantial or both light.
  • Let the hem land within a centimetre of the collar on a mid-top. Anything more looks accidental.
  • Keep socks invisible or tonal. A white sock over a black mid-top cuts the leg in half.

Sizing

All sneakers run 39–46, and unavailable sizes are struck through on the product page so you can see stock at a glance. Browse everything in sneakers, and finish the look with a boxy tee or a satin bomber.

Frequently asked

What is the difference between mid-top and low-top sneakers?
A mid-top finishes at or just below the ankle bone and visually shortens the trouser, so it wants a shorter or slightly wider hem. A low-top sits under the ankle and disappears beneath the trouser, keeping the leg line unbroken.
Do mid-top sneakers work with trousers?
Yes, provided the hem clears the collar of the shoe. Aim for a hem that ends within a centimetre of the top of the sneaker, or a wide leg that falls over it cleanly with no stack.
Should socks be visible with low-top sneakers?
Keep them invisible or tonal to the trouser. A contrasting sock creates a horizontal break at exactly the point where a low-top is supposed to make the leg read longer.
How do you keep leather sneakers looking new?
Wipe the upper after each wear, use cedar or paper shapers to stop the toe box creasing, and treat the leather two or three times a season. Rotate pairs so the lining dries fully between wears.
